How to choose

**Selecting the right screw for the job:**

1. **Drive type** — Pozi (PZ2 for most general screws) is standard in the UK. Phillips, Torx and hex drives suit specific applications.
2. **Thread type** — coarse thread for timber and softwood; fine thread for metal and sheet materials; self-drilling (self-tapper) for fixing into steel without pre-drilling.
3. **Head type** — countersunk for flush finish into timber; pan head for fixing into metal or where a flush finish is not required; wafer head for sheet materials.
4. **Coating** — BZP (bright zinc plated) for general indoor use; stainless steel for outdoor and corrosive environments; yellow passivated for mild outdoor use.
5. **Length** — screw length should be 3× the thickness of the material being fixed into the substrate beneath.

What screws do window installers use for frame fixings?

Self-tapping pan-head BZP screws (typically 4.8×45mm or 4.8×60mm) are standard for fixing uPVC window and door frames to masonry using frame fixings or plugs. Check frame manufacturer specifications for recommended fixing centres.

Are BZP screws suitable for outdoor use?

BZP screws have limited corrosion resistance and will rust if exposed to moisture long-term. For outdoor fixings, use A2 or A4 stainless steel screws or hot-dip galvanised fixings.

What's the difference between a self-tapping screw and a self-drilling screw?

A self-tapping screw cuts a thread into a pre-drilled pilot hole. A self-drilling (or TEK) screw has a drill-point tip and creates both the pilot hole and the thread in a single operation — faster for sheet metal and steel fixing.
