How to choose
1. **Tooth count** — fewer teeth (16–40T) for fast ripping cuts in timber; more teeth (60–80T) for fine crosscuts in MDF and sheet goods.
2. **TCT vs. HSS** — TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) blades last far longer than HSS on abrasive materials. Always choose TCT for trade use.
3. **Blade diameter** — must match your saw's capacity (160mm, 165mm, 185mm, 210mm, 216mm, 254mm, 305mm are common).
4. **Bore size** — confirm the central bore diameter (typically 16mm, 20mm, 25.4mm, or 30mm) matches your saw's arbor.
5. **Kerf width** — thinner kerf (1.6–1.8mm) reduces waste and is suitable for fine joinery; full kerf (2.2–2.8mm) is more stable for structural cutting.
**Trade tip:** After cutting uPVC or aluminium, wipe the blade with a damp cloth immediately after use — aluminium and PVC residue bonds to carbide tips when it cools and significantly accelerates wear if left. A few seconds of cleaning extends blade life considerably.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a wood saw blade to cut uPVC window frames?
Not recommended. uPVC requires a specific blade with negative hook angle and fine tooth count to prevent melting and chipping. Use a dedicated plastic-cutting blade for clean results.
How do I know when a saw blade needs replacing?
Signs include: burning smell during cuts, rough or ragged cut edges, saw needing excessive feed pressure, and visible damage to the carbide tips. A sharp blade cuts cleanly and quickly.
Do saw blades have compatibility with all saw brands?
Blades are compatible based on diameter and bore size, not brand. As long as the diameter and arbor bore match, a blade will fit any saw of that specification.
