DPC vs DPM: Damp-Proof Course and Membrane Explained
Share
DPC and DPM both describe moisture barriers, but they usually appear in different parts of a construction detail. A damp-proof course is commonly a narrow barrier within a wall. A damp-proof membrane is a sheet covering an area such as a floor. They need to connect correctly where the design requires it.
Buying by the abbreviation alone makes it easy to order the wrong width, thickness or pack quantity. This guide explains the differences between the products in our damp-proofing and building treatments collection.
What is a DPC?
A physical damp-proof course interrupts the path of moisture through masonry. TIMCO black DPC is supplied in 30m rolls with several widths. The width should come from the wall detail, not from whichever roll happens to be cheapest.
Pay particular attention to the variant quantity on the GSD listing: the selectable options include multiple rolls per pack. For example, the 100mm option is listed as nine rolls, while the 225mm option is four rolls. Check the complete option label before comparing prices or calculating how many packs to order.
A physical DPC roll is also different from a remedial chemical DPC. If the task is treating confirmed rising damp in an existing wall, our Dryzone and Dryrod comparison covers the injection and rod formats.
What is a DPM?
TIMCO Toughsheet DPM is a polyethylene sheet membrane used within a specified floor or construction build-up. The correct thickness and position depend on that build-up. Check the project specification and floor-system requirements before choosing a variant.
| Listed option | Gross sheet area |
|---|---|
| 4m × 12.5m, 500 micron | 50m² |
| 4m × 25m, 250 micron | 100m² |
| 4m × 25m, 300 micron | 100m² |
| 4m × 5m, 250 micron | 20m² |
These areas are width multiplied by length. They are not finished-floor coverage allowances: overlaps, upstands, cuts and awkward room shapes use material. The handy-pack colour may differ from the larger black rolls; confirm the selected SKU if colour matters to the order.
Plan joints before buying tape
A room layout tells you where sheet joints are likely to fall. Sketch the proposed runs, identify penetrations and allow for the specified edge details. Work out the length of joints as well as the area of membrane.
TIMCO double-sided DPM jointing tape is listed in a 10m × 50mm roll for bonding membrane overlaps. The product guidance calls for use alongside the appropriate high-strength PVC builders tape. Follow the manufacturer's complete joint detail; a roll of double-sided tape should not be assumed to be the entire sealing system.
Where does tanking fit?
Tanking slurry, such as Toptank 25kg, is a different material used in a specified waterproofing system. It does not make DPC rolls, floor sheet membranes and drainage components interchangeable. Below-ground projects need the wall, floor and junctions assessed together before selecting products.
A better way to compare your order
- Use the drawing to establish the required DPC width and DPM thickness.
- Compare roll length and total rolls per pack.
- Allow for the specified overlaps and perimeter details.
- Add compatible jointing materials and protection against installation damage.
- Check product availability before scheduling the pour or floor installation.
Compare DPC rolls, DPM sheet options and jointing tape, or return to the damp-proofing buying guide if you are still deciding which type of treatment the job needs.
