STABILA 80 T vs 106 T: Which Extendable Spirit Level?
Share
Choose the STABILA 80 T for shorter adjustable spans, such as fitting a level between cabinet sides or across smaller openings. Choose the 106 T when the job needs a much longer measuring surface. Start with the actual distance you need to bridge, then check the item code: different versions have different length ranges.
Compare the lengths before choosing
| Model / item code | Closed–extended length | Buying note |
|---|---|---|
| 80 T / 20167 | 61–103cm | Shorter current version |
| 80 T / 18879 | 63–105cm | Earlier version with a different range |
| 80 T / 20168 | 90–149cm | Longer current 80 T version |
| 106 T / 17708 | 183–315cm | Long-span option |
| 106 T / 17709 | 213–376cm | Longest option in this comparison |
The item code is the safest way to distinguish versions when a listing or an older tool uses a slightly different size label. The ranges above are in centimetres. Select the matching option on the product page; do not assume every 80 T has the same extension.
Three checks for your job
- Measure the smallest space. The closed level must fit between the surfaces or obstructions around the work.
- Measure the longest span. The tool must reach the points you intend to compare without exceeding its extension limit.
- Check handling and storage. Allow space to position, read and carry the level. A 106 T remains a long tool even when closed.
For example, a 100cm span falls within the range of the 61–103cm 80 T. A 250cm span requires a longer tool such as the 183–315cm 106 T. These are length comparisons; the surface and working position still need to suit the task.
How the two designs differ
The 80 T combines an extending edge with a metric scale and a lock for the selected length. The 106 T uses a longer telescopic body, eccentric clamps and spacers intended to help with irregular surfaces or laths. Decide whether those features serve your measuring task rather than choosing solely by maximum reach.
Accuracy changes when extended
STABILA lists normal-position accuracy of ±0.5mm/m when closed and ±1mm/m when extended for these models. Reverse-position accuracy is ±0.75mm/m closed and ±1mm/m extended. The closed specification should not be quoted as the accuracy at full extension. Follow the instructions for the measuring face and position you use.

Common questions
Is 80 T 20167 the same size as 18879?
No. Item 20167 is 61–103cm; the earlier 18879 is 63–105cm. Match the item code when replacing a specific tool.
Is a longer level always the better choice?
A longer reference can span a larger component, but it must fit the work area. A short adjustable level and a long telescopic level solve different access problems.
Do I need magnetic holding?
Length adjustment and magnetic holding are separate features. For work on steel, compare the options in our magnetic and torpedo level guide.
