The Complete Guide to Screws for uPVC Window and Door Installation

Using the wrong screw on a uPVC window or door installation is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes on site. The wrong gauge, drive type, or material can strip threads, crack frames, or cause fixings to work loose over time. This guide covers every screw type you'll need for a professional uPVC installation from start to finish.

Why Screw Selection Matters for uPVC

uPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) is a rigid but relatively brittle material compared to timber or steel. It requires self-tapping or self-drilling screws with specific thread geometries to avoid cracking and ensure a secure pull-out strength. The core selection criteria are:

  • Thread pitch: Coarse threads for direct fixing into uPVC profiles; finer threads where you need to draw components together
  • Point type: Self-drilling (Type 17) for harder materials; self-tapping for uPVC
  • Head type: Countersunk for flush fixing; pan head or hex head for structural fixings
  • Drive: PZ2 (Pozidriv 2) is standard for frame screws; hex drive for baypole and structural fixings
  • Finish: Zinc-plated (BZP or ZYP) for interior and sheltered applications; stainless steel where there is long-term moisture exposure

Frame-to-Wall Fixings

Concrete Frame Screws (Masonry Anchors)

Concrete frame screws (also called masonry anchors or frame fixings) are used to fix uPVC window and door frames directly to concrete, blockwork, or brick reveals. They are typically a heavy-gauge screw with a hex head, requiring a pre-drilled pilot hole into the masonry.

Common sizes: 7.5 x 42mm (shallow reveals), 7.5 x 82mm (standard), 7.5 x 122mm (deep reveals or structural applications)

Installation tip: Always use the correct pilot drill diameter and depth — oversize holes will not hold, undersize holes will crack the masonry.

Timber Frame Fixings

For timber-frame construction, use a coarse-thread self-tapping screw with a countersunk head. Length should be sufficient to penetrate at least 30mm into the structural timber member after passing through the uPVC frame wall.

Sash-to-Frame Fixings (Baypole Screws)

Baypole screws (also known as self-drilling hex-head screws) are used to fix sash corners, reinforce frame joints, and secure bay pole connections. Their self-drilling point cuts its own hole in the steel reinforcement inside uPVC profiles.

Common size: 4.8 x 19mm for standard corner joints; longer versions for heavier structural applications

Finish: BZP (bright zinc plated) — suitable for interior use within the profile cavity

Glazing Bead Fixings

Glazing beads in uPVC frames are typically snap-fitted and do not require screws. However, some installation systems or bespoke frames may require small self-tapping pan-head screws. Use 3.5 x 9.5mm or similar, taking care not to overtighten.

Ironmongery and Hardware Fixings

Hinges, handles, and locks are typically fixed with machine screws into threaded inserts within the uPVC profile. Always use the screw size specified by the hardware manufacturer — substituting a longer or coarser screw can pull the thread or damage the profile.

Cover Caps

For any countersunk screw fixing visible on the finished frame, use colour-matched screw cover caps. These snap-fit over the screw head to give a clean, professional finish and prevent moisture ingress into the fixings.
