How to choose
1. **Length** — 60cm (2ft) for coursing checks; 120cm (4ft) for running level across a wall face; 180–200cm for setting long datum lines.
2. **Vial count** — minimum 3 vials: plumb (vertical), level (horizontal) and 45°. Masons levels typically have a larger plumb vial for easier reading.
3. **Accuracy** — look for a stated accuracy of 0.5mm/m or better. Stabila Pro models are rated to 0.5mm/m; some premium levels achieve 0.3mm/m.
4. **Frame material** — aluminium box section is the UK trade standard — durable, lightweight and resistant to distortion.
5. **Magnetic base** — useful for plumbing steel posts and frames; not needed for general bricklaying but very helpful for steel construction work.
**Trade tip:** Never leave a spirit level propped against a wall — even a short fall can crack a vial or shift the accuracy of the level. Hang levels horizontally on dedicated hooks, or store flat in a protective sleeve. Check accuracy at the start of each major project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Stabila spirit levels worth the price premium?
For professional daily use, yes. Stabila's accuracy, vial legibility and long-term durability justify the cost. A level that needs replacing every year is more expensive than a Stabila that lasts a decade.
How do I check if my spirit level is accurate?
Place the level on a flat surface and note the bubble position. Rotate 180° — if the bubble is in the same position, the level is accurate. If it moves, the level needs calibration or replacement.
What length spirit level is standard for bricklayers?
Most UK bricklayers carry a 60cm and a 120cm level as a minimum. Some also carry a 180cm masons level for long wall runs and datum setting.
