**Choosing the right hammer for masonry work:**

1. **Brick hammer** — dual-head (flat face + chisel peen) for cutting bricks and blocks. Standard weight is 450–680g (16–24oz).
2. **Club hammer (lump hammer)** — heavy short-handled hammer for striking chisels and bolsters. 1kg–2kg is typical.
3. **Sledgehammer** — for demolition and breaking out. 3kg–8kg depending on the application.
4. **Handle material** — fibreglass absorbs shock better than wood; all-steel (Estwing) is virtually indestructible; wooden handles are traditional but can split.
5. **Balance** — a well-balanced hammer reduces fatigue over long periods. Hold it at the end of the handle — if it pulls forward, it's too heavy for comfortable use.
